The Japanese name means "pearl" and perhaps refers to the tree's fall color that possesses a quasi-iridescent quality. As if reflected light is producing glimmers of different colors, the fall foliage seems to shimmer with a display of pastels and apricot. Unusual and dramatic, the medium-sized, upright tree bears green, palmate foliage in summer and maintains an attractive silhouette in winter.
