Ponderosa Pine
Ponderosa pine, the iconic tree of the American west, flourishes in a variety of environments, from the slopes of the Rocky Mountains to the western edge of the Great Plains. Its adaptability and hardiness make it a favored choice for those seeking to cultivate a piece of the wild in their own backyard. The bark matures to a rich cinnamon red, developing broad plates separated by deep fissures. The branches are short and well-spaced, with distinctive long, slender needles. Given time, this long-lived tree will exceed heights of more than 40’, so be sure to give it room to thrive. Thanks to a deep tap root, the rugged ponderosa pine can withstand summer drought and high winds. The seed for our stock was sourced at high elevation east of the Cascades.
