Hiba arborvitae
The variety of common names this species goes by (Hiba arborvitae, elkhorn cedar, and lizard tree) speaks to the fascination its distinctive foliage inspires. Flattened fernlike branchlets are clad in shiny green, thick scale-like leaves, each of which has a curved shape like an antler and is marked with thick white stomatal bands on the reverse. The Hondae variety is native to the cool, moist forests of northern Japan and adapts to full sun or partially shaded sites. Shrubby when young, it will eventually develop a leader and develop into a full sized, pyramidal tree.
